Established in 1873, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Ontario SPCA) is a non-profit charitable organization that is unique in Ontario's animal welfare industry: the Ontario SPCA Act mandates the Society to enforce animal cruelty laws and provides Society Branch and affiliated Humane Society investigators with police powers to do so.

In addition to being responsible for enforcing the province's animal cruelty laws, the Ontario SPCA operates more than 20 animal shelters where compassionate staff and volunteers feed, exercise, bathe, socialize, play with and provide comfort to animals. They drive the wounded and sick to the veterinarian change bandages administer medications and try to provide the most comfortable stress-free environment possible. When ready, animals are adopted into loving homes. The Ontario SPCA also plays a key role within each community served by raising awareness about the compassionate treatment of animals through humane education activities and special events.

The Ontario SPCA provides care and temporary housing to animals of every shape and size from guinea pigs to pot-bellied pigs, horses to bunnies, reptiles and of course dogs and cats. In 2006, the Ontario SPCA found new homes for over 8,000 animals.

Through its commitment to provide care to all animals, the Society also operates a Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, located in Midland. Each year the Centre, which is one of the largest wildlife rehabilitation facilities operating in the province, admits over 1000 animals with the goal of treating sick, injured and orphaned wildlife so they can be released back into their natural habitat.

Through the kindness and generosity of individuals like you, the Ontario SPCA provides a voice for those who are unable to speak for themselves. You can help save the lives of animals in need by making a donation of stock. You can designate your donation to the area of greatest need or to a specific animal shelter or program area. Every gift to the Ontario SPCA helps to give an animal a second chance at a safe and happy life.
